Standards and Guidelines

A Standard for Pottery Studies in Archaeology. This standard, produced with funding from Historic England, was compiled by the Prehistoric Ceramics Research Group, the Study Group for Roman Pottery, and the Medieval Pottery Research Group with the aim of creating the first comprehensive, inclusive standard for working with pottery. It is intended for use in all types of archaeological project, including those run by community groups, professional contractors and research institutions. Click the link above to download a copy.

Guidelines for the Archiving of Roman Pottery. The aim of the Guidelines is to establish common methods of approach and some standardisation of recording.

Illustrating Samian Ware. Guidelines for the recording, illustration and publication of samian ware, in particular decorated vessels and stamps. It focuses on rubbings as the principal means of illustrating samian, though provides information on other techniques, for example photography and conventional line drawing.
